This study investigates how even small scale occurrences of voter fraud can erode public confidence in elections and diminish the legitimacy of elected officials. Using a survey experiment, it finds that fraud undermines legitimacy across party lines, while voter ID laws boost perceptions of legitimacy even when fraud has occurred.
